The Sound Museum is undoubtedly the best Xisle release. Each side of this double cassette unveils a different, intricately crafted sound canvas. "Shadow Chasers" is an elegant tribute to Tangerine Dream sequencer driven music. "Shifting Sands" is a dreamy, trance - inducing piece that combines the best of Phaedra and Klaus Schulze's mid - eastern influenced lead synth lines. "The Domain of Arnhiem" lets you luxuriate in soft floating electronics while conjuring images of Camel's wonderful Rain Dances. Finally, beware of the sirens in "Beyond the Known Horizon." They will ply their wiles and seduce you to go on a mystical trip. Chuck van Zyl, Peter Gulch, and D. Andrew Rath "painted" these canvases live at The Sound Museum during March and November 1991. Not only does the music draw you in, Jon Alderfer's cover art also entices the eye. At first glance it looks like an old Victorian museum chock full of sculpture and art. After staring at it for a few minutes you start to realize that each canvas in the museum is a different Alderfer picture from various Synkronos releases (Barriers, Perchance to Dream, Eternity's Engine, Facets, Callisto, Ganymede, Europa, Io, The Xyl File, et al). Truly a soumd museum. Highly recommended.
